KMC, ZMC staff baton charged for demanding salaries
KARACHI: A heavy contingent of police on Tuesday used water cannons,
teargas and baton-charge to disperse employees of the Karachi
Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and Zonal Municipal Corporation (ZMC)
during their protest at Fawara Chowk near Governor House. The protesters
tried to enter the red zone against non-payment of their three-month
salaries and for release of grant by Sindh finance department. A large
number of employees reached Karachi Press Club, held a protest there and
tried to march towards Chief Minister’s House, but, police used water
cannons, teargas and baton-charge, dispersing them. The police also
arrested at least 30 employees, including union leader Muzaffar Shah.
The sources said at least 30,000 employees of KMC and ZMC had been
deprived of three-month salaries. He said: “We will devise a future
strategy after the release of all our workers.” Union leaders have also
threatened to stage more protests outside the Governor House and the
Chief Minister’s House by parking garbage trucks near them. The sources
informed that Sindh Chief Minster Syed Qaim Ali Shah had directed Sindh
finance department to immediately pay the salaries of employees. They
said that around Rs 0.5 billion had been transferred to a bank, while
